Recovery II

I am feeling better, although trying to take up my normal routine quickly makes me tired again.  I went back to babysitting this Wednesday.  Biggie was so happy to see Sophie that he would run at her, fling his arms around her neck, and take them both to the ground.  He needs to work on his technique.

We got him a costume from Target last weekend.  Its a giraffe!  It will be perfect for when we take him to ZooBoo on Halloween.  I'll have to take some pictures of him in front of the giraffe enclosure.

Today on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire there was a former Jeopardy champion on, Vik Vaz.. He went home with $25,000. I wish I had his stack, I would have got everything right through the $100,000 question.  They're finally airing the show in Baltimore so I can watch it now.  They changed the rules all up this season.  Now the questions are mixed up and the money is mixed up, so you could answer the easiest question and have it be worth $25,000.  I think the questions overall are easier now, too.

I get my staples out on Monday.  I can't wait!  They are 10 times more annoying than the actual scars.  And today I got some baked potato chips, so I satisfied my snack cravings.  Sugar is nice, but Jolly Ranchers are not filling.

Happy St. Patrick's Day!  We have the corned beef and cabbage stewing in the crockpot right now.

We had our taxes done.  I thought we were going to owe a lot, but with our baby tax deduction and charitable giving, we'll actually get a few dollars back!  That means I can pay off our credit cards and my car with the Millionaire money I saved.  I hereby retire the "soul-crushing debt" tag.

And it feels good!  Now we can start saving for a house!

My new icon is actually an old avatar from the Millionaire Bored.  LittleBeast13 drew this for me after I whiffed the Gustav Klimt question.  He is known for using gold foil in his artwork, did you know that?  I am a Gi(Raff)e, of course.

5 months postpartum and I want an icon that represents me and not Biggie.  My book The Newborn Mother: Stages of Her Growth is spot on.

From the middle of the second month to the fifth, most women don't think about themselves a good deal.  In conversation the subject of the baby dominates, and the women rarely spontaneously say anything about themselves unless it has to do with the relationship to the baby...during the fifth month, however, there are a number of developments that rupture the symbiotic duality and eventually force the mother's attention back on herself..The emergence from symbiosis-for that is what is going on here-is not easily accomplished by a mother...during this month and the next a mother must regain her sense of identity as an adult woman and begin to remember who she was before the baby, before she became a mother.

The author (Andrea Boroff Eagan) interviewed 58 mothers from birth to nine months postpartum.  I only wish it didn't have such junk breastfeeding advice (she says babies naturally wean themselves at nine months!), but  it was written 25 years ago.

Anyway,  my new icon!  Isn't it nice?

Hickory Farms is having a sale on all their stuff right now, and they ship free to military addresses.  I bought some nuts for my brother.  I feel guilty that I haven't sent him a care package in the last two months.  I have halloween candy in the box I've been preparing for him, but I keep meaning to make him cookies.  It never seems like I have any time.

Now that the days are shorter Matthew is entering into his yearly hibernation mode and going to bed super early.  That gives me a chance to sneak out of bed once Biggie falls asleep and have a little time to myself.  I need to start making some time for me.  Some of the guys from the WWTBAM message board have invited me to go to a trivia pub night with them.  But its in Mt. Airy, so its an hours' drive away.  I probably won't get to go every week, but I'd like to do it.

We're trying to get Biggie on sippy cups.  He never took a bottle, but he seems more interested in the cups.  But what he really wants to eat right now is paper.  He always lunges for the newspaper when I'm reading it, and today he grabbed Matthew's candy bar wrapper.  A second tooth has popped up next to the first in his mouth, and he's nipped me a few times when nursing.  I hope he doesn't get any more teeth for some time.

Okay, the car is packed, thanks to me waking up at 5:30 and the baby staying asleep.  He's starting to sleep until 7 or 8 in the morning now, thank heavens.  I'm afraid of what's going to happen when Daylight Saving Time ends in a few weeks, though.

I had a great time up at my folk's home, albeit exhausting. Grandpa is Biggie's favorite person.  He has magic shoulders, thanks to his experience of getting his six kids to sleep.  He puts Biggie up on them, starts dancing around and singing "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" and he falls right asleep.  I got to watch the Yankees sweep the Twins with my Dad.  Grandma got lots of photo ops with her grandson.  She took him to Sears and dressed him in a little Yankees uniform and a Santa Suit (I think she's sending him out as her Christmas card this year).  Then we went to a pumpkin patch.  He wore his Halloween costume (a jack-o-lantern with a hoodie that had a stem coming out).  I should have charged for pictures with him.

I got to see my Uncles on Monday.  My Uncle Jim had a present for me.  He said I had to read the card first.  It said "I meant to give this to you last year.  Hope you don't mind it being late too much."  It was a gorgeous book collection of Gustav Klimt's works, the question I got wrong on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.  Ha,ha.

I stayed until Tuesday but I still feel like I didn't have enough time at home. But I missed Matthew and I wanted some relaxation time here to regroup and repack before I went to Connecticut.

The only person in my family who knew the Klimt question was Emerald. She was jumping up and down shouting "B! B!" at the TV. My family thought she was just guessing, but she knew it! She told me her Girl Scout Troop went on a tour of a museum and at the end they did an art project with foil like Klimt. Expect to see her on the show someday.

Here is an article from my hometown newspaper, that just basically recounts the show. They hyphenated my name, which isn't correct.  My maiden name is now my middle name.  I wish they would have interviewed me!

I'm getting tons of old high school classmates messaging me on facebook since there was publicity in the papers there, even a cut guy from my street who I didn't think knew my name.

My Mom asked me how we planned to spend the money.  I told her we're socking away half of it in a 6 month CD for taxes, tithes, charity, and the doula,  we're paying off my car.  At first I wanted to finish off our credit card debt, but Matthew convinced me that it would be better to pay off the car.  If he lost his job suddenly, we could just pay the minimum on the credit card, but if we couldn't pay the car bill, they would repossess it.

Mom didn't like this idea and told me that we'd "talk later" about it.  I'm going to tell her to mind her own accounts and I'll mind ours.  We've had eight months to decide this.

Now that I’ve had the viewing party, I can finally talk about how I did on Who Wants To Be a Millionaire. Check the millionaire tag for more of the story.

First off, congratulations are due to my lj friends [livejournal.com profile] mommarazzi and [livejournal.com profile] blenderx , who had their babies recently. Hooray for babies!

Friday was my last day of work. I guess technically I'm not unemployed until Monday. I still feel great. Its nice not to have anything hanging over me due at work. Its all done forever! This time last year I was freaking out about Peace Camp. I'll probably go down and volunteer this summer, but its not my responsibility anymore.

This week, I'm going to make lots of cakes, lemon bars, and peanut butter squares for my Millionaire viewing party. All my Baltimore LJ friends are invited. Its at my Community Center on Wednesday at 7 p.m., 501 E Chase St. Baltimore, MD 21202

And now, for pictures! )

Great day

Today has been a great day. Its my little sister's Champagne Birthday-8 on the 8th! I got her a pretty fake pearl necklace because she loves pretty things. She had a beauty parlor birthday. All her little girlfriends went with her to get their nails done, then they had ice cream and recreated a dance from High School Musical 3.

Then when I checked my e-mail today I saw that Dad had e-mailed. He gets to leave Iraq a little early, and he should be home by Father's Day! I'm so happy he'll be home. Of course, my brother Trevor then e-mailed that he had finally gotten out of Kuwait and was in Iraq, so I don't think they'll get to meet up after all.

Then there was an e-mail from Who Wants to Be a Millionaire. My show is going to air on June 15th. You can check local listings here. Baltimore people, you're out of luck, since no station here carries the show.  I'm planning on having a party, but I have to work out the details with my friend in DC on how I'm going to tape it and get it here.  I'll let you know when I get that worked out.
